Stage 2: Leading as Team

The objective of stage two is for teams to start leading as a team: to grasp that starting a new church community requires a different kind of leadership to classic inherited church models. A key feature of this stage is understanding and building that team.

The second key focus of this stage is reflecting on the culture that teams set. We ask teams to identify their shared values and to understand that the culture that defines their new church community must be a discipling culture.

After the Gathering - please post photos of your teams' action plans into the WhatsApp group.

Oversight Ministers - please send them the Stage Handbook to keep them up to date. Do also ensure you strongly encourage each of them to sign up to the next Oversight Pathway. You should also plan to meet each Oversight Minister with their planter before the next gathering to check in on progress, issues, safeguarding and general progression.

Mentors - please send them the stage handbook and induction materials. In this stage they should meet their planters for the second and third times.

Dear <NAME>,

We've just finished our second Myriad gathering looking at the theme of "Leading as Team", in which the community has asked themselves how they will lead well together, as well as how and who they might ask to join their team. Please read the Stage 2 Handbook for more details on the content they have covered and the outlook for this stage, including your involvement.

With thanks for our partnership in the Gospel,

<YOUR NAME>

After the Gathering - please post photos of your teams' action plans into the WhatsApp group.

Debrief G2 - with your hub partner:

  • Review feedback - what do you need to pay attention to next time?
  • Assess each team's health - who needs more attention? Do you need to discuss with their oversight minister?
  • What insights from your prayer champion?
M9

Plan Mid Stage - Do look at the content on "Flags and Footprints" and choose a relevant Knowledge Nugget to share.

Thrive in Five - please share the relevant Thrive in Five video in your community's WhatsApp group. What conversation does it generate?

WhatsApp - have you got everyone into the group? Where is God at work? Which team/person needs attention?

M10

G3 Facilitators Briefing - have you got this in your diaries?

Mentors - please circulate the mentor review. It would be ideal to have all responses before your next check in meeting, and then address any issues at G3.

Dear <NAME>,

As a Myriad Mentor, you should by now have fulfilled or diarised your third meeting with your mentee and we would like to know how things are progressing. Please complete a Mentor Review within the next two weeks. You can access that here and it should take only 5 minutes to complete.

With thanks for our partnership in the Gospel,

Oversight Ministers - please arrange to meet with each planter and their oversight minister before G3. This is to check on their team formation and safeguarding. It is important that you are confident that each new church community has an emerging leadership team (so it's not all the responsibility of one person) and that they have addressed safeguarding policies and procedures.

Gathering 2 Content

G2.0 Welcome and Worship

Use these slides to introduce the weekend, remind participants about building blocks and set expectations. Plan 20 minutes of worship.

G2.1 Co-Workers

This devotion is designed to highlight:

  • God is a God of relationship
  • We are designed to co-work with God and with each other
  • Working without God or each other is sinful
  • We are given gifts which are to be used together

G2.2 Where are we up to?

This session allows each team to present where they are up to in the formation of their new church community. Teams should refer back to the actions they determined at the previous gathering

G2.3 Leading as Team

Leadership of a new church community demands a new model of leadership as a team. Leading as a team is fundamental to the health and sustainability of a new church community. Recognising the different gifts and skills of your team will be essential.

G2.4 Worship & Prayer

This is a led reading of John 15, where we invite God to speak through the reading of Scripture.

G2.5 Forming a Team

A short activity where individuals practice inviting others to join their team using the elevator pitch.

G2.6 Developing a Discipling Culture

Culture will form either actively or passively within any community of people. This session explores how teams can discern and practice values that are consistent with creating a culture where disciples of Jesus are made.

G2.7 Team Rhythms

This session highlights the priority for teams to establish regular team rhythms of prayer, planning and review, proximity and mission.

G2.8 Prayer Practice: Examen

This is a contemplative Ignatian prayer exercise called Examen. We allow God to speak to us through a Spirit-led sensitivity to our feelings, to discern where He wants to meet us.

G2.9 Action Planning & Report Back

Teams are given time to make a series of 3-5 key actions that they will engage with in the coming 6 months.

G2.10 Roundup

This closing session wraps up the gathering with important notices:

  • Date of Mid Stage 2
  • Date of Gathering 3
  • WhatsApp

Please also do the review - this enables us to keep learning and make improvements.
