Stage 3: Discipling Pathways

Stage 3 focuses on the need for new church communities to form a series of activities that cohere together into a pathway for discipling people, rather than church as an event. Teams will be asked to think about what they currently do and what they need to adapt, to form this pathway.

This stage sets the groundwork for Stage 4 and without this understanding and structure, the danger is that teams replicate current models of church, which can struggle to nurture disciples. We are aiming for each team, as they progress into Stage 4, to have developed a series of activities which form a clear pathway of discipleship that reflects their context.

Playbook

After the Gathering - please post photos of your teams' action plans into the WhatsApp group.

Debrief G3 - with your hub partner:

  • Review feedback - what do you need to pay attention to next time?
  • Assess each team's health - who needs more attention? Do you need to discuss with their oversight minister?
  • What insights from your prayer champion?

Mentors - please send them the Stage Handbook to keep them up to date.

Oversight Ministers - please send them the Stage Handbook to keep them up to date. Do also ensure you strongly encourage each of them to sign up to the next Oversight Pathway.

Thrive in Five - please circulate the relevant content half way between G1 and the Mid Stage meeting, then again between the Mid Stage meeting and G2.

WhatsApp - have you got everyone into the group? Where is God at work? Which team/person needs attention?

Next cohort - now you are beyond the half way point of this cohort. Who might be ready to start a second cohort? Now you've got some stories, it's easier to communicate the outcomes and mechanics of Myriad to others. Plus the planters in your first cohort might be good mentors or facilitators for the next.

Celebration and Blessing - in Gathering 5, there is space for a final celebration. What shape do you want that to be? And who might you want to invite that would endorse the ministry of these fledgling new Christian communities and the people that lead them?

Gathering 3 Content

G3.0 Welcome and Worship

Use these slides to open the Gathering, including a reminder about our essential building blocks.

G3.1: Highly Exalted

This devotion is a reminder that God is transcendent and is an invitation to look up and become lost in awe once again at His magnitude, wisdom and power.ย

G3.2 Where are we up to?

This session allows each team to present where they are up to in the formation of their new church community.ย  Teams should refer back to the actions they determined at the previous gathering.

G3.3 Discipling Pathways

This is the key idea of this stage. It introduces the idea that we are not looking to establish church as an event, but rather a series of activities that form a pathway for discipling. Teams are asked to consider how what they are building now allows people to travel on a journey of discipleship.

G3.4 Worship & Prayer

This starts with a 5 minute personal prayer reflection on the names of God, which then leads into a time of open prayer and sung worship. The listed names of God are in the participantsโ€™ handbook.

G3.5 Pathway Ideas

Four approaches to disciple-making that could form a stage of a discipling pathway are presented. These should enable teams to move from the assessment of what their disciple-making pathway looks like today, to reflect how it could develop.

Resources:

G3.6 Pathway Scenarios

This session provides four scenarios where discipling pathways can fail to develop or become ineffective, to help teams reflect on the effectiveness of the discipling pathway in their new church community.

G3.7 Prayer Practice

This is a time for people to pray in their teams. Teams will pray for doors of opportunity to open and for any resistance to go, along with closing the door on any challenges they may be facing.

G3.8 Action Planning & Report Back

Teams are given time to make a series of 3-5 key actions that they will engage with in the coming 6 months.

G3.9 Roundup

As the gathering concludes, teams are reminded of the hub WhatsApp group and the other key elements of the Myriad Pathway, along with future dates.
