Stage 4: Discipling Communities

Stage 4 focuses on the theme of making disciples and explores key principles which form a community that makes disciples of Jesus. These discipling principles are:

  1. Becoming like Jesus (including ‘dying to self’)
  2. Hearing and obeying God
  3. A community where faith is ‘caught’
  4. A community where faith is taught
  5. A community that makes disciples who make other disciples.

Teams are asked to determine their strengths and weaknesses in these areas and to decide on concrete ways to develop.

Playbook

After the Gathering - please post photos of your teams' action plans into the WhatsApp group.

Debrief G4 - with your hub partner:

  • Review feedback - what do you need to pay attention to next time?
  • Assess each team's health - who needs more attention? Do you need to discuss with their oversight minister?
  • What insights from your prayer champion?

Mentors - please send them the Stage Handbook to keep them up to date. Please also circulate the mentor review form at the Mid Stage meeting, and arrange to check in with them before Gathering 5.

Oversight Ministers - please send them the Stage Handbook to keep them up to date. Hopefully by now they have attended an Oversight Pathway, if not then there is still potential. Book a meeting with them and their planter before Gathering 5 to check, amongst other things, that appropriate and agreed arrangements are in place around Safeguarding.

Thrive in Five - please circulate the relevant content half way between Gathering 1 and the Mid Stage meeting, then again between the Mid Stage meeting and Gathering 2.

WhatsApp - have you got everyone into the group? Where is God at work? Which team/person needs attention?

Next cohort - what are you thinking about a next cohort?

Celebration and Blessing - what are the thoughts about this and who has been invited?

Gathering 4 Content

G4.0 Welcome & Worship

Frame the weekend, set expectations, invite participants fully into the journey.

Ensure key notices are shared.

Reminder of the Building Blocks as a key part of the Pathway.

G4.1 Why make disciples?

This devotion explores our motivation for making disciples and focuses on the nature of God and God’s heart and passion for people.

G4.2 Where are we up to?

This session allows each team to present where they are up to in the formation of their new Christian community.  Teams should refer back to the actions they determined at the previous gathering.

G4.3 Principles of Discipling 1

This session is the first of two sessions to explore 5 key principles of discipling. In this session teams will explore the first three principles:

  1. Becoming like Jesus
  2. Hearing and obeying God
  3. Discipleship is ‘caught’

G4.4 Worship & Prayer

This time of worship and prayer is an opportunity for one of the teams to lead the cohort. The style and content used in this session is for the hub leader and invited team to agree together.

G4.5 Principles of Discipling 2

This session explores the final 2  principles of discipling:

  1. Discipleship is taught
  2. Disciples make disciples

We ask teams to identify where they are stronger and weaker and then to make actions in terms of how to take steps to strengthen discipling in their new church community.

G4.6 Discipling in Community

This session explores ways of creating gatherings that reinforce the discipling elements of the ‘discipling principles’ sessions, primarily through the ‘three thirds’ model of gathering.. The group activity allows teams to explore the ‘three thirds’ model in their context.

G4.7 Prayer Practice

This is a longer ‘prayer practice’ session, in order to give input around the prayer of intercession, before teams spend time interceding for those who are not yet  Christians, that they are connecting to within their community.

G4.8 Action Planning & Report Back

Teams are given time to make a series of 3-5 key actions that they will engage with in the coming 6 months.

G4.9 Roundup

As the gathering concludes, teams are reminded of the hub WhatsApp group and the other key elements of the Myriad Pathway, along with future dates.

The Challenge of Discipling

In this session we are going to consider some of the challenges that we might unknowingly be facing in this present context in which we are seeking to make new disciples.

Knowledge Nugget: The Shield

Insurance is a protective shield for every organisation. This video introduces the what, when and how of insurance. When a new Christian Community goes solo though, they will need a longer team meeting to discuss what type of insurance they might need.
